Lesson 18
2007
Walking around New York one afternoon I found an old typewriting manual 20th Century Typewriting: A Complete Course and was fascinated by the poetic potential of the writing exercises. I picked phrases from throughout the book and strung them into a poem (read the PDF).
For the performance, I dressed up as a secretary and hooked up a piano keyboard to a computer. With each note played, a typewriter "clack" was heard, and the text was revealed, letter by letter. Programming was simple: I made a Max patch that would allow me to move frame-by-frame through a movie of the animated text.
